MUSIC EDUCATION

1980-2005 Studied under Lt. Ustad Hafeez Ahmed Khan (Padmashree) of Rampur Gharana in Delhi. Currently one of Ustad Hafeez Ahmed Khan's able disciples whom he had chosen to represent his style.

1990-1995 Studied under Lt. Pandit Ramesh Nadkarni of Bombay (disciple of the late Ustad Aman Ali Khan)

PERFORMANCES

Directed and sung in the production of commercial music album of ghazals entitled Khwab-e- Sahar.

Sung in the production of commercial music album of songs entitled Sab Rango Ka Samavesh.

Directed and sung in the production of commercial music album of popular folk songs.

Founder and director of the popular cultural organization Pratidhwani, based in Delhi.

Performed before live and television audiences in all over India, Germany, Austria, Italy, Slovakia and the USA.


OTHER ACTIVITIES


As a Dramatist Subhendu has been active in the field of drama as an amateur artist. He has acted, directed and music directed in several plays, both street and proscenium in Delhi and outside. These plays are based on the life and struggle of common people, the themes ranging from freedom struggle, education, gender issues, communal harmony, caste issues, the problems of the youth and students etc. In fact, this activity is an expression of Subhendu's social commitment. A special feature of his plays is the application of folk forms and emphasis on music and dance. He has directed a play performed by a group of tribes (Bheel) from west-central part of India.

As a Music Director Subhendu has directed music for the films "Imagine Kalpana", a short film on the life of the great freedom fighter Kalpana Dutta (Joshi) (produced by Doordarshan), "Asli Azadi", a documentary on women freedom fighters and "Apne Haque Ke Liye", a documentary on the rope makers of Rajaji National Park, and for the play "Andorra" produced by Pravah, and the ballet “Azadi ke Taraane”.

As a Cultural Activist Widening his sphere of activity from music, Subhendu has taken up culture as one of the important issues in social change and justice. Through the platform of his group Pratidhwani he has been organizing periodically workshops on culture among the youth and the students and raising the question of values, human integrity and our social duties.

As a Scientist A scientist and academic by profession, he received his Ph.D. in biophysics from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. He is currently Head, Department of Biophysics at the University of Delhi South Campus. He is actively engaged in the researches on how we learn patterns, for example, musical patterns, ragas, taals. The work involves integration of multi disciplines like neuro-physiology, physics, computer science and psychology.
